Food Miles Cake - the ANSWER

Maureen's wonderful looking Iced Carrot Cake generate a LOT of interest for the guess the number of food miles contest - over 100 entries so patience while we sort through to find the winner (the cake keeps well in an airtight tin )

To recap you were told that the main ingredients were flour, eggs, butter, sugar, orange, walnuts, sultanas, and of course carrots.

And the answer is...

8,463 food miles

...a surprisingly large figure made up as follows:

Flour (from Hampshire) 160 miles
Eggs - Landrake- 3 miles
Carrots -Cornwall, 20 miles
Sugar - Paraguay - 5,600 miles by sea
Butter - Yeo Valley, Somerset - 80 miles
Rind of Orange - Spain- 800 miles
Walnuts - France - 300 miles
Sultanas - Turkey - 1,500 miles
