Maureen's wonderful looking Iced Carrot Cake generate a LOT of interest for the guess the number of food miles contest - over 100 entries so patience while we sort through to find the winner (the cake keeps well in an airtight tinSmile )

To recap you were told that the main ingredients were flour, eggs, butter, sugar, orange, walnuts, sultanas, and of course carrots.

And the answer is...

8,463 food miles

...a surprisingly large figure made up as follows:

  • Flour (from Hampshire) 160 miles
  • Eggs - Landrake- 3 miles
  • Carrots -Cornwall, 20 miles
  • Sugar - Paraguay - 5,600 miles by sea
  • Butter - Yeo Valley, Somerset - 80 miles
  • Rind of Orange - Spain- 800 miles
  • Walnuts - France - 300 miles
  • Sultanas - Turkey - 1,500 miles

Many thanks to all those who took part and perhapsstarted to think a bit more about where our food comes from and why food prices are shooting up. Congratulations to our winner (to be announced here shortly)
