Making Saltash Greener is the name of a two week festival which will take place in Saltash in East Cornwall from 11th until 26th September 2010.
Saltash is one of a group of Cornish Transition Towns where local environmental groups have got together to look at ways the community will prepare for Peak Oil through a number of ways including looking at low impact living and other green living intiatives.Other West Country towns that have joined the Transition movement include Totnes in Devon and Falmouth in Cornwall.

Veg in Beds 2010
Some vegetables were harvested aren't they wonderful!

As part of our campaign recently to get everyone in and around Saltash growing at least a few of their own vegetables the Town Council gave us permission to plant vegetables and herbs amongst the flowers in all the town planters in Fore St.We followed this up with a competition 'Spot the Veg in Beds'.
The most difficult to guess proved to be the parsnip, kale and in particular the tarragon (which now has lovely blue flowers on it) and in fact no one got everything right!Thank you to all who took the time to enter the competition,We hope you had fun!
The competition has now ended and the 5 winners (3 children and 2 adults) have received their prizes. Our thanks to Cornish Farm Produce for the lovely basket of fruit they generously donated and to the Co-op for further generous help with prizes. The best entries were put into, and pulled out of, a hat!
Our thanks to the nearby shops who are acting as guardians and making sure the beds nearest their shops are watered and looked after. |

Many members are concerned about the application from Tescos to build a store at Carkeel Roundabout. Whilst there is not (yet) a formally agreed SEA response there is a copy of the response submitted by Ruth Mason and Godfrey Allen available for download here Tesco Planning Letter GA & RM (22.19 kB 2010-06-29)

We had a very successful stall at Saltash May Fair with many people stopping by to guess the food miles in the cake, admire the Lego future of Saltash, and generally find out more.
The cake was won by Emma Breed who was within 44 miles of the total 6749 miles. Guesses ranged from 7 to 17,000 miles!

About SEA
 |
The SEA group was formed in 2007 |
We aim to work alongside the whole community in creating a more sustainable environment and in preparing for the inevitable changes which will occur in our world over the next decades as a result of climate change and the reduced supply of oil, gas and other resources.
We are joining the wider Transition Network to help build a resilient, healthy community in harmony with nature and with an awareness of how our actions here in Saltash and the surrounding villages affect the whole planet.
Amoungst many initiatives, we have been working on ways to reduce energy use and the waste we throw away. With the help of shops and the support of the Town COuncil we have minimised the use of plastic bags in Saltash with a 'Say NO to Plastic Bags' campaign. With the Saltash Card promoted by the Gateway CIC we are encouraging people to shop locally and buy local produce wherever possible.
This autumn we paln to hold a series of meetings and films to introduce everyone to the idea of Transition and the actions and projects that will flow from this new approach to our future.
