TESCO 2 Months, 1 Week ago
Well the planning application is going in - what do you think?

Here's a link to Godfrey & Ruth's letter to start the discussion going.

Another town, another Tescos, another nail in the coffin of the small traders - but they are already laid out in their coffin under the current system.

As a planning application there are only very limited grounds for objection to each individual case - and we can put a lot of energy into fighting these battles, but we know that even if we win the odd one they will be back again. This is the tide of the capitalist system and we mustn't be deceived into playing King Canute.

I think there are things that could be done positively. For starters it is in the council's power to levy a charge on car-parking - I would suggest an annual fee of £4000 per space in the Tesco carpark would be a good way of getting some benefit back into the town. Tescos could choose to either recoup this through charging £1 per hour for use of their carpark (they will have about 4000 trading hours in the year), or absorb it from their profits - that's their business decision.

On the Today programme this morning a discussion on Tesco in Callington and why they are selling Ginsters pasties made next door but trucked over 250 miles to reach the shop!

It's unbelieavble!
